Flaherty Family

I have been researching my Flaherty line for many years.  I not only have found many relatives of mine but also quite a bit of information on extended family.

I, along with many cousins have traced our family back to our ancestor that came to America from Ireland.  His name was Adam Flaherty.  Family story is he dropped the "O" from his last name after arriving in America because his new wife, with her strong England accent, it would sound like she was saying Old man.

My Great Grandfather Thomas Morgan Flaherty was a Private during the Civil War in the Union Army of the 10th and 15th Infantry Regiment West Virginia.  He enlisted on September 15, 1863.  His half-brother John Pendalton Flaherty was a soldier in the Confederate Army of West Virginia during the Civil War.

I have come across incorrect information on some sites.  Mainly from contributors to a site called fold3.com formerly known as footnote.com.  The contributors on this site have a ELIZABETH (ROBINSON) PATTON listed as Thomas Morgan Flaherty's wife and mother of his children.  This is INCORRECT.  Thomas Morgan Flaherty was married to SARAH JANE (PATTON) CLOER.  Cloer being the last name of her first husband.  Thomas was her second.  I have copies of the marriage records AND Thomas' Civil War records indicate his wife's name was Sarah Jane (Patton) Cloer.
